We have a new executive board as of January 13th, 2020.
Ray Wade has retired and Ed Geppert did not run for a board position this term as he plans to retire in the next year or two.
Ray Wade was our executive vice-president and worked out of Edmonton. Ray was the president of Local 255G that merged with us in 2013.
Ray had a long career n printing, moving out here some 40 years ago from Newfoundland. Ray worked as a newspaper press operator until becoming the full-time representative of Local 255G.
Ed Geppert was on our executive board for close to 40 years – 36 of them as recording secretary. Ed knows the history of our Local; he has been there through several mergers and many changes. Both will be missed at the executive board, their experience and wisdom will be hard to replace.
The Local has a new position now of Secretary Treasurer and Brenda Mason (Queen’s Printer) is the first person to fill the dual role. Previously we had a recording secretary and a treasurer. The new bylaws amended those positions; combining the duties into the new Secretary Treasurer position. We have a new Vice President too; Steven Berg (Transcontinental Vancouver) is a Vice President along with Antonio Lopes. There are two Vice Presidents on our executive board. Randy Jean (Westkey Graphics) is a new member at large on our Board.
There are two vacancies remaining on the Executive Board. There is a posting out for nominations to fill the open spots.
On the negotiation front, both Westkey Graphics and Thunderbird Press have ratified new collective agreements. Queen’s Printer negotiations open January 28th with two dates scheduled and Transcontinental Vancouver members will resume negotiations in February with six dates scheduled during the first two weeks of the month.
Local 780G members are very active with our Provincial Council. Sister Brenda Mason has been elected to the Provincial Executive Board. In addition to her Secretary Treasurer position with Local 780G Brenda has taken on duties with the Provincial Executive and is acting as the liaison for the provincial women’s committee. Justin Singh (Transcontinental Vancouver) has been elected to the BC Young Workers Committee. The committee adds to the diversity of our Union ensuring the voices of our youth are heard. There are three members on the committee from across British Columbia. Justin is not shy; he will be a strong voice for the Young workers of the province. President Alex Charles was elected to the provincial EFAP (Employee & Family Assistance Program) committee. The committee will be working to enhance EFAP coverage for Unifor members in BC.
Next year we will turn 120 years old! Our first charter is from July 24, 1901 – we should talk about commemorating the occasion – what do you think?
